1904, Paul Cezanne, In the Bibémus Quarry -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: Situated near Aix-en-Provence, these rocks are over eight million years old. Cezanne captures their craggy surfaces in a fiery orange palette, using a slightly looser version of his oblique brushstrokes, giving this prehistoric site a modern feeling. He painted many views of this quarry, but this is the only one featuring a person, who seems diminished before the colossal stone cliffs.
