1889 (ca.), John Russell, Les Terrasses de Monte Cassino -- National Gallery (London)

Here the Australian artist John Russell experiments with bright colours and vivid brushstrokes to capture the warm Mediterranean light. As the title suggests, the work was probably painted during a visit to his wife Marianna's mountainous hometown of Cassino in Italy. However, as the landscape also resembles the rocky coast of Antibes, in south-east France, it could have been painted there during his trip of 1890-1.

 

Russell was a friend of Van Gogh, painted with Monet and introduced Matisse to Post-Impressionist techniques and colour theory.
