1526, Garofalo, A Pagan Sacrifice -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label:
Several figures gather for a pagan sacrifice. A young man pours red wine over a goat's head on an ancient altar, assisted by a priest. Beside them are a dancing flute player and putto. To the left, a young woman carries an upside-down torch, while an old woman balances a basket of fruit on her head.
This scene is inspired by a famous antiquarian book, the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, published in Venice in 1499.
