1877, John Singer Sargent, Girl on the Beach, Study for "En Route pour la Peche" and "Fishing for Oysters at Cancale" -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Sargent's sister Emily described his work at the fishing village of Cancale in a letter to a friend: "He has great difficulty in finding people willing to pose.... When he does find anyone willing, the crowd around him is so great, that he cannot work, so he has to make friends with some old woman, and get her to let him paint in her court[yard]."
