1635 (ca.), Payag (attributed), The Cremation Ground -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: This esoteric image of a demonic goddess Bhairavi seated on a headless corpse in a charnel landscape is a philosophically inspired meditation on the cycle of life and death, unsparingly detailing the finality of the mortal form. Payag has used fine lines, stippling and delicate washes of color to create the main subject, while gold monochrome drawings in the borders form a continuation of the desolate landscape in the painting.
