1825 (ca.), Caspar David Friedrich, View of the Baltic Sea -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Smoke rises from the chimneys of houses nestled among the trees, adding a domestic note to the landscape. Atop the rise at center is a pergola flying a tiny flag, which may be a guide to approaching ships; a handful of boats, perceptible by the white edges of their sails, are just visible on the water. The colors on the pennant connect the scene to the Baltic city of Rostock, a center of maritime activity in Friedrich's home region.
