1835 (ca.), Caspar David Friedrich, A Walk at Dusk -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: This late painting of an autumnal landscape under a dusky blue sky brings together two of Friedrich's favorite motifs: an ancient grave marker (or dolmen) and the new moon, accompanied by the so-called evening star, the planet Venus. In juxtaposing these emblems of death and rebirth, the picture alludes to the transcendence of death through memory. The cloaked figure, possibly the artist himself, clasps his hands in prayer, as if mourning a bygone era.
