1817 (ca.), Caspar David Friedrich, Neubrandenburg -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Two travelers in medieval-style costume, worn in Friedrich's time as a sign of political liberalism, pause on the road beside a massive boulder, possibly an ancient grave marker, and gaze upward. Ahead of them, a Gothic church soars above a skyline inspired by Neubrandenburg, where some of Friedrich's family lived. The dark landscape offsets a spectacular sky, as a storm clears to reveal a cloud bank edged with color. Silhouetted against this backdrop, Neubrandenburg appears to be a celestial city, a sacred destination for spiritual pilgrims.
