1817 (ca.), Caspar David Friedrich, Greifswald in Moonlight -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: Greifswald lies on the Baltic Sea, but this view of the city skyline can only be gained from land; Friedrich imagined the body of water in the foreground. He embellished it with realistic details of boats and fishing tackle that he had sketched along the northern coast. In the background, the artist's hometown seems to hover magically between the clouds and the waves. The full moon is bisected by the steeple of the cathedral where Friedrich was baptized, the Dom St. Nikolai, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. The city profile strongly resembles the one that appears beyond peatlands in Meadows near Greifswald, hanging nearby.
