1822, Caspar David Friedrich, Moonrise over the Sea -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: The people gazing at returning ships evoke the German concept of Fernweh, the yearning for distant places and for experiences of the unknown. At the same time, the boats sailing into the harbor suggest homecoming and refuge. Friedrich created the sense of a vast, encompassing space by arranging the purple clouds in a shallow curve that conveys the aro of the sky. Moonlight illuminates the horizon from end to end; without this bright line, it would be impossible to discern where the sea stops and the heavens begin.
