1885, John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet Painting by the Edge of a Wood -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Sargent's portrait of his friend Claude Monet (1840-1926) is a landmark in the history of Impressionism, as it shows one of the movement's founding members painting in plein air near his home at Giverny with his future wife Alice Hoschede (1844-1911). Monet's arm appears as a blur of movement above his palette as he paints Meadow with Haystacks near Givery (1885, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). Sargent paid homage to Monet in subject and style—adopting an Impressionist technique for the rendering of this scene. Sargent cherished this painting and kept it in his studio until his death—a connection to Monet and record of their mutual afinity for piein-air painting
