1835 (ca.), Caspar David Friedrich, Riesengebirge Landscape -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Offering no level plane on which to rest our gaze, the sloping terrain of this mountain landscape keeps the eye in motion. This sense of movement is amplified by fog gathering in the forest at left, wisps of haze floating across the distant hills, and rolling clouds. Left in an advanced but still incomplete state, this painting reveals some of Friedrich's underdrawing in the clouds, mountains, trees, and especially the rocky foreground.
