1885 (ca.), [Nathdwara, India], Gopashtami: Festival of Cows (detail) -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)
From the museum label:
Captivated by his flute, the cows of Braj gaze adoringly at Krishna. Each is exuberantly adorned with peacock feathers and tassels for Gopashtami, the festival honoring Krishna's coming of age as a herder. One cow lovingly licks his feet, while Krishna's childhood friends offer lotuses and baskets of treats.
Pichwais made for Gopashtami depict Shri Nathji as a flute-player rather than as a mountain-lifter. This Gopashtami pichwai is distinguished by its graceful line quality and the artist's playful concealing of gopas amidst the herd.
