1780 (ca.), [Guler or Kangra, India], The Gopis Search for Krishna, folio from a Bhagavata Purana (Ancient Tales of the Lord) -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label:

One night, after dancing with the gopis, Krishna mischievously disappeared. The bereft women, pale in the moonlight, desperately searched for their beloved God. By mixing all his pigments with white, the painter evokes a landscape illuminated by moonbeams.

The gopis yearning for Krishna is a spiritually significant metaphor. It conveys an intensity of feeling that can connect an individual with the divine. In the exhibition's last gallery, blue and gold pichwais further illuminate Krishna's playful ability to conceal and reveal himself.
