1773, Angelika Kauffmann, John Simpson, Father of Maria Susanna, Lady Ravensworth -- Belvedere Palace (Vienna)

From the museum label: Angelica Kauffman was one of the most influential female artists of the 18th century. She was one of the few women of her time to attain international recognition in an art world dominated by men. As women were not allowed to study at art academies, Kauffman was taught by her father. Her family background provided her with an alternative to academic training with its systematic exclusion of women. Kauffman painted this portrait of John Simpson during her many years in London. Her skill as a painter can be appreciated in her rendering of different textiles: fine brushstrokes convey the delicate lace of the collar and the sheen on the silk cloak.
