1438 (ca.), Jan van Eyck, Portrait of a Scholar (formerly identified as Cardinal Albergati) -- Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna)
From the museum label: Doubts regarding the long-accepted identification of the sitter as Niccolò Albergati, Cardinal-Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome, are justified. The sitter looks more like an advisor to Philipp the Good, Duke of Burgundy or a scholar. However, we still do not know the name of this aged gentleman in an ermine-trimmed crimson robe. Jan van Eyck's portraits were instrumental for the evolution of Early Netherlandish portraiture with its emphasis on realism and verisimilitude.
