From the museum label: Eleanor (1498-1558), a daughter of Philipp the Handsome and the elder sister of Emperor Charles V, was married twice, the second time to Francis I, King of France. This portrait was painted during Joos van Cleve's sojourn at the French court. She is holding a letter addressed in Spanish to the 'Most Christian and powerful Queen, my Mistress.’
