From the museum label: Rubens prepared his large compositions by first making model sketches. These modelli in his own hand helped deveiop an initial concept for the entire composition and coloration. It was presented to the patron and also used as a model by the painters in Rubens's studio: they copied the sketch to the larger format of the painting, which Rubens then went over again.
