1915, Egon Schiele, Crescent of Houses II (Island Town) -- Leopold Museum (Vienna)

From the museum label: In terms of both coloring and composition, Krumau Town Crescent from 1915 is among the artist's more vivid and expansive townscapes. Until 1914, his depictions showed the buildings along the VItava in a strictly horizontal alignment. Here, however, Schiele deliberately incorporates the bend in the river that characterizes this southern Bohemian town. This adds vitality to the picture, which is enhanced by the depth perspective, the lighter coloring, and the randomly arranged architectural elements. Schiele interpreted topography more freely in his paintings, than in his drawings, composing his pictures according to a personal dramaturgy.
