1915, Egon Schiele, Embracing Couple, Egon and Edith Schiele -- Leopold Museum (Vienna) [special exhibition]

From the museum label: This drawing showing Schiele embracing his wife was probably done shortly after their marriage. Although Edith is seen from behind, she can be identified by her distinctive clothing, like the peaked cap. The artist's puppet-like face, with its pin-prick eyes, reflects the sense of alienation present in many of his depictions from this period, starting in 1914 and through 1915. Embracing Couple can be read as a generic statement about relationships and the concomitant loss of self.
