1510, Raphael, Pythagoras with His Students -- Albertina (Vienna)

From the museum label: In this study for the group surrounding Pythagoras in The School of Athens, Raphael outlined his figures clearly with thin lines precisely drawn in metalpoint. Finely applied complementary white heightening alternates with shading to emphasize those points where the spatial relations of the figures' limbs would be visible. The artist used assistants in studio garb for this study, needing just three. He used a bald man for Pythagoras, to the left of whom this man is repeated as the copyist with the curious gaze. The curry-haired boy returns as the boy depicted in profile at the drawing's left edge, and the figure wearing a head covering and bending forward with his hand upon his breast is identical to the man standing beside Pythagoras on the right.
