1889, Vincent van Gogh, Entrance to a Quarry -- Albertina (Vienna) [special exhibition]
From the museum label: Between rampant trees and shrubs, a view of the entrance to a quarry opens up. In this center composition, created in 1889 in Saint-Rémy, where Van Gogh spent a year in a psychiatric hospital, the artist for the first time returned to a muted palette, although he had come to prefer bright, radiant colours after moving from Antwerp to Paris in 1886. Rendered in dynamically flowing lines, the landscape motif is composed of shapes that at first appear abstract to the eye. At the same time, the restless brushstrokes and the tension inherent in the composition reflect the artist's inner turmoil and are an expression of his state of mind.
