1890, Vincent van Gogh, Snow-Covered Field with a Harrow (after Millet) -- Albertina (Vienna) [special exhibition]

From the museum label: Cool shades of blue and green convey a sense of the biting cold of a snow-covered winter field. Tilling implements lie still and unused on the ground. Van Gogh often paints agricultural motifs over the changing seasons, metaphorically relating them to the theme of the cycle of life. The deserted snow-covered field, populated only by a flock of crows, became a symbol of transience for the artist, plagued as he recurrently was by self-doubt and depression. The painting was modeled on a work by Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), a leading member of the Barbizon school, whose concept and philosophy of art Van Gogh explored repeatedly and intensively.
