1507 (ca.), Raphael, Study for the Bridgewater Madonna -- Albertina (Vienna)

From the museum label: This spontaneously executed drawing by Raphael was in preparation for what is known as the Bridgewater Madonna in Edinburgh (National Gallery of Scotland), which the artist painted around 1507. The paper's light brown ground as well as the figures' sketch-like metalpoint depiction and subsequent refinement of the main motif with long, flowing pen lines are inspired by Leonardo's drawings of the 1470s. The pose of the Christ Child follows the examples of Leonardo's no longer extant Madonna of the Yarnwinder and Michelangelo's Tondo Taddei (London, Royal Academy). The artist had been able to study the marble tondo at the home of his friend Taddeo Taddei. This drawing hence bears witness to Raphael's intensive study of his great Florentine artist-colleagues.
