1919 (ca.), Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Cattle at Sunset [Kühe bei Sonnenuntergang] -- Albertina (Vienna)
From the museum label: The disbandment of the 'Brücke' group of artists in 1913 led to isolation and emotional unrest in Kirchner. Having signed up for military service in 1914, he suffered a serious physical and mental breakdown. When repeated stays at sanatoriums brought no relief from his nervous condition and alcohol and pill addiction, he settled in the health resort of Davos in 1918, living in a mountain cottage on the Stafelalp near Frauenkirch together with his partner, Erna Schilling. The unspoilt mountain landscape, the grazing cattle, and the mountain farmers at work became Kirchner's preferred subject matter. The improvement of his mental state went hand in hand with a change in his painting style. Angular outlines, intensive colours, and explicitly two-dimensional compositions now characterised his work. The crowdedness and bustle of his earlier pictures gave way to a spacious calm and romantic atmosphere.
