1888, Vincent van Gogh, Field with Irises near Arles -- Albertina (Vienna) [special exhibition]
From the museum label: Van Gogh moved to Arles in the south of France in 1888. The landscape around the town became a central motif for him. Fascinated with the radiant colours of the fields in the glistening sunlight, Van Gogh captured the lilies in bloom. The purple of the flowers and the green of the leaves make for a stark contrast to the bright yellow of the wheat. Composed of quick, broad brushstrokes and dots, the colour fields in the foreground run diagonally to the picture plane. High above the houses that rise behind a line of trees on the horizon, the blue sky unrolls as a horizontal strip. In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent drew a comparison with Japanese prints, which the artist himself passionately collected and which use similar compositional means.
