1925 (ca.), Marianne von Werefkin, Night Prowler -- Albertina (Vienna)
From the museum label:
Night Prowler is one of Marianne von Werefkin's late works and was painted in Ascona, Switzerland, where the Russian lived from 1918 until her death in 1938. Choice of motif, mode of depiction, and color composition make for a mysterious nocturnal landscape scene. The picture reproduces a subjective impression of nature. The artist was encouraged to pursue this approach by her contacts with artists of the group "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) as well as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh.
In 1891, the painter met Alexei von Jawlensky. Together with Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, the friends stayed in Murnau in Upper Bavaria. It was this cooperation from which the "Neue Künstler-vereinigung München" (Munich New Artists' Association) emerged in 1909. When Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc distanced themselves from it and founded "Der Blave Reiter" in 1911, Werefkin too exhibited her work with the group.
