1888, Vincent van Gogh, White Cottages at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer -- Albertina (Vienna) [special exhibition]

From the museum label: The view of the white houses was painted by Van Gogh in 1888 in the village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer near Arles. Using red, orange, blue and green, the artist combined strong colour contrasts here, against the background of which the white cottages stand out in stark contrast. He took his inspiration, for one thing, from the bright light of the south, and for another, from his study of coloured Japanese woodblock prints.
