1905, André Derain, The Harbor at Collioure -- Albertina (Vienna)
From the museum label: In the summer of 1905, Derain and Matisse met in Collioure in Southern France. Derain painted the small fishing village and the port with its lighthouse. The shimmering sea, depicted in a Pointillist manner in such unmixed colours as blue, green, and red, contrasts with the strong Mediterranean light, which the artist has rendered in yellow and ochre tones. He merely adumbrated the fishing boats tied to the mole: a loose fabric of strokes and patches describes the motif in such an abbreviated fashion that it almost seems abstract. In Collioure, far removed from Paris, Derain arrived at an unprecedented freedom in terms of brushwork and colouring.
