1923, Oskar Kokoschka, Dresden, Augustus Bridge with Steamer [Dresden, Augustusbrücke mit Dampfer] -- Albertina (Vienna)
From the museum label: Oskar Kokoschka ranks among the most important proponents of Expressionist art in Austria together with Egon Schiele, Richard Gerstl, and Max Oppenheimer. Distancing himself from Jugendstil early on, he developed an original Expressionist style. During his years in Dresden from 1919 to 1923, he painted nine panoramic cityscapes. The present work from 1923 shows the artist's view from the window of his studio at the academy near Brühl's Terrace: the Augustus Bridge and Mary's Bridge toward the Lößnitz Hills. The pastosely applied, intensively brilliant paint serves as the essential means of expression.
