From the museum label: The lotus is one of the most important plants in China and a central symbol in Buddhism. Its roots, leaves, and seeds are edible and are used in Chinese cuisine. Among the plants of the four seasons, it symbolises summer. In addition, it is associated with a wealth of auspicious meanings. The association with peace in this image results from a specific feature of the Chinese language, which has numerous homophones, words with the same meaning: one of the terms for lotus, he, is pronounced like the word for peace or harmony.
