1956, Li Kuchan, “Gorgeous spring” -- Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Berlin)
From the museum label: The peony is extremely popular as the "queen of flowers" and a symbol of wealth and honour. Their magnificent colours and the lush shapes of the perennials and shrub peonies, which are particularly common in China, have also made them a metaphor for female beauty. Cultivating dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), when the plant was particularly prized. Every year in April, Luoyang in central China dedicates a festival to the flower of spring.
