1000 (ca.), [China, Xinjiang], Escape from the palace -- Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Berlin)
From the museum label: The colours and very even, thin lines in this painting are typical of Uyghur art. A well-painted horse is ridden by a bodhisattva: this is the moment when Prince Siddhartha decides to escape life in the palace. His horse's hooves are lifted by yaksha (protective spirits) to prevent them making a noise. Later he reaches enlightenment and becomes Buddha Shakyamuni. This painting was once in the middle of a dome.
