1478 (ca.), Sandro Botticelli, The Virgin and Child with Singing Angels (the "Raczynski Tondo") (detail) -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)
From the museum label: This tondo (round picture) expresses the melancholy of Mary, who is aware that her son is going to die too young. Jesus, for his part, is unknowing of the drama to come: he looks at us and draws golden milk from his mother's breast. The byname 'Raczynski Tondo' is a reference to the provenance of the painting, which came to the Berlin Museums in 1884 on permanent loan from the counts Raczynski.
