From the museum label: The subject is the conquest of La Goletta fortress near Tunis by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1535. He is depicted on the left in armour beneath the burning fortress; on the white horse in front of him is the imperial commander. The painting is unfinished. Blue-grey scumble, sketchy hints at constellations of figures, and colourful executions in the centre can be seen.
