1502 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), Madonna and Child (the "Solly Madonna") -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)
From the museum label: This early work was made while Raphael was still employed in the workshop of his teacher Perugino in Perugia. From him, he took on the type of the semi-figure Madonna in front of a landscape with rolling hills, along with a twisting movement in the Christ Child. The goldfinch -- a bird that eats thorny thistles -- on the child's knee is a reference to Christ's suffering and resurrection.
