From the museum label: Like in a museum, Robert compiles the most important remnants of ancient architecture northwest of the Alps. During his studies at the French Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, he had studied the work of the renowned architectural and ruins painter Giovanni Paolo Panini. Robert processed his impressions in several ruin paintings, which he created in Provence during the mid-1780s.
