1721, Jean-Antoine Watteau, The Dance (Iris) -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)
From the museum label: Children are gathered on a meadow to play at being shepherds. The girl in the elegant dress, who is named 'Iris' in the verses of a contemporary reproduction engraving, awaits an invitation to dance. The basket of roses, along with Cupid's shield and arrow, are indicators that the young dancer will soon have outgrown children's games. The picture was for a long time in the possession of the Prussian royal family.
