From the museum label: The altar-picture emphasises the close bond between Mary and Jesus. Their tender faces with the gentle transitions of light and shade testify to familiarity with Leonardo da Vinci's Madonnas. The detailed realism of the still-life, however, stands in the Dutch tradition. Massys was Antwerp's most important painter in his day.
