From the museum label: On the occasion of his first official visit to Pope Benedict XIV in 1756, the procession of the French ambassador to the Vatican, Etienne-François de Choiseul, makes its way across St Peter's Square. Panini painted a first version for the ambassador. For this second one, the French churchman abbé de Canilliac had the coaches, supplemented by his person in the second coach next to Choiseul, added later to a picture already completed in 1754.
