1473 (ca.), Andrea del Verrocchio, Virgin and Child -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)

From the museum label: Verrocchio reveals himself here as a painter with a glowing palette. But he also worked as a sculptor and goldsmith, which can be seen in the painting: Jesus' body is represented extremely sculpturally, and Mary's jewellery is unusually refined. The atmospheric landscape heralds the works of Verrocchio's most famous student, Leonardo da Vinci.
