1502 (ca.), Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), Madonna and Child with Saints Jerome and Francis -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)
From the museum label: In this early devotional image by Raphael, the figures are placed particularly tightly within the picture plane. The right hand of Francis follows the child's gesture of blessing and bears a stigma with golden rays. Raphael thus refers to Jesus's crucifixion and the resulting redemption of humanity. At the same time, he thereby makes the stigmata recognizable as part of the imitation of Christ (imitatio Christi).
