1635 (ca.), Diego Velázquez, Portrait of a Lady -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)
From the museum label: In his capacity as court painter to Philipp IV of Spain, Velázquez had travelled to Italy in about 1630. Therefore, the subject is likely to be Leonor Maria de Gúzman, Condesa (countess) of Monterrey and wife of the Viceroy of Naples. Her brother was the powerful Count-Duke of Olivares, whose portrait Velazquez likewise painted. The hand on the back of the chair and the depiction with a fan are characteristic of ladies' portraits in the Spanish court.
