1647, Rembrandt van Rijn, Susanna and the Elders -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)

From the museum label: Two judges harass Susanna as she bathes in her husband's garden. If she spurns them she faces defamation and the death penalty, yet she refuses and is saved. Rembrandt spent 12 years painting and altering the painting. In the 18th century, English painter Joshua Reynolds largely reworked the originally more colourful and more exquisitely designed picture. However, the two main figures remained untouched.
