From the museum label: Nijmegen rises up beneath a clouded sky with the tower of the Valkhof, a medieval imperial palace of Charlemagne. Van Goyen is one of the 17th century's most prolific painters. He used and varied set pieces multiple times in his paintings, as here, for instance, the ferry conveying the coach. Painting restricted to a handful of hues was additionally part of his efficient and cost-effective working method.
