1440 (ca.), Jan van Eyck, Portrait of a Man with a Red Caperon -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)

From the museum label: The unknown man belonged to the middle classes, as his clothes demonstrate. The same man is also to be seen with his wife in Jan van Eyck's double portrait in London (National Gallery). Usually, he is identified as a member of the Arnolfini family, but that is probably based on a misinterpretation of sources.
