1755 (ca.), Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, The Martyrdom of St Agatha -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)

From the museum label: Tradition has it that Agatha was persecuted for her Christian faith in around 250. The Sicilian proconsul had her breasts cut off and subsequently had her killed. Agatha, however, trusted in Christ and showed fortitude of faith through her acceptance of martyrdom. In the once semi-circular upper part of the painting her gaze met a heart with a crown of thorns. Tiepolo made the picture for the high altar of the Benedictine convent of S. Agata in Lendinara (Venetia).
