1624, Jusepe de Ribera, Madonna with the Christ Child and Saint Bruno -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)
From the museum label: When Ribera painted the picture, he was living in Naples. However, with his signature, he refers to his Spanish origins. The painting depicts the founder of the Carthusian order. It was likely made in reaction to the Pope's recognition, in 1623, of Bruno's veneration, which now applied beyond the order to the Church as a whole. Staff and mitre on the ground are references to Bruno's forgoing of the bishop's office.
