1635, Rembrandt van Rijn, Samson Threatening His Father-in-Law -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)
From the museum label: Here, Rembrandt chose a rarely depicted theme from the Old Testament. Shortly after a quarrel at his wedding celebration, Samson learns from his father-in-law that the latter has married off Samson's wife to another man. Furiously, Samson threatens him with vengeance on the Philistines, the people of the bride's parents. The energetic gesture of the super-humanly strong Samson underlines the drama of the scene.
