1635, Rembrandt van Rijn, The Sermon of John the Baptist (detail) -- Gemäldegalerie (Berlin)

From the museum label: No other work by Rembrandt features as many figures as this one. As can be discerned from the various types of costume, the people gathered around John represent the world's population as a whole. The Baptist calls for penitence in the face of the coming Kingdom and for people to get baptised in the Jordan. Rembrandt skilfully depicts many different reactions to the sermon.
